Bitcoin’s Place in Modern Finance

Bitcoin (BTC) is now a fixture in the financial system, with retail and institutional investors accessing it through exchange‑traded funds and companies launching products that let users borrow against their holdings.

While buying a coffee with Bitcoin remains rare, the asset class has expanded into a range of services that hide the underlying blockchain from end users.

Crypto Culture and Market Trends

The industry that grew from Bitcoin has produced several cultural moments: CryptoKitties captured attention in 2018, yield farming surged briefly, Dogecoin gained popularity during the pandemic, and non‑fungible tokens attracted buyers such as Christie’s and Time Magazine. The sector also emerged as a major political donor in the 2024 elections and is shaping the cost of the 2026 midterms.

Frank La Salla, CEO of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, emphasized the split between cryptocurrency, the asset class, and blockchain, the technology at a Georgetown University event.

Permissioned chains such as Canton Network, JP Morgan’s Kinexys and Intercontinental Exchange’s partnership with OKX are moving toward production, while financial institutions develop in‑house networks for enterprise use cases.

Industry Voices on Adoption Pace

Charley Cooper, president of Ava Labs and former managing director at R3, reflected on the “dissonance” between crypto prices and adoption speed, noting that institutional R&D and live deployments with real‑world assets are accelerating exponentially.

Crypto in Popular Culture

The sector’s influence extends to entertainment, with movies and TV shows referencing crypto, and even a decentralized autonomous organization appearing in a video game the author played recently.

Bitcoin’s true legacy may lie less in its price and more in the blockchain infrastructure that now underpins finance, technology and culture.
