Tributes poured in across Europe as the football world mourned the loss of Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel following a fatal injury.
Football’s collective grief highlights the sport’s deep‑rooted sense of community in times of tragedy.
Fatal injury and death
Jesús de Miguel, a striker for CD Tenerife, suffered head and chest injuries after a heavy collision with goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second‑division match against FC Andorra on Monday.
His condition was initially described as stable but serious, but it worsened on Tuesday morning and he died at 07:00 GMT.
Moments of silence across Europe
A minute’s silence was held before Tuesday evening’s Champions League matches throughout Europe. The silence will be repeated for Wednesday’s fixtures and for all Europa League and Conference League matches this week.
Tenerife’s response
Fans laid flowers and lit candles beneath a black‑and‑white image of de Miguel at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, the club’s home ground.
The club issued a statement announcing six official days of mourning, during which all club activities will be suspended. Players, staff and officials will attend de Miguel’s funeral in Navahermosa, Toledo.
Tenerife will also open its stadium on Saturday evening to allow supporters to “bid a fitting farewell”.
Family and supporters’ messages
De Miguel’s family thanked everyone for their messages of support and asked for privacy during this terrible time, adding “May he rest in peace.”
Fran León, president of Tenerife’s federation of supporters’ clubs, said, We are torn by the news. All of the island is in mourning. All of Canarias is in mourning. It’s a shared pain.
Fan David Tejera noted that de Miguel’s “effort” and “passion” for Tenerife would endure.
In moments of loss, the football world’s unified tributes underscore the sport’s powerful ability to bring people together.
