Google announced that any school that completely blocks artificial intelligence tools will also be cut off from Google Search.

Google announced that schools which prohibit artificial intelligence (AI) entirely will no longer have access to Google Search.

Chris Phillips, vice‑president for education at Google, explained to the New York Times that “search and AI are deeply integrated,” adding that students at schools that have banned AI “will not have access to search, and they’ll see a message from their school that indicates it’s not available.”

Because Google controls roughly 91% of the global search engine market share across all devices, the policy could have a substantial impact on U.S. students.

What the announcement is prompting

Teachers and parents are being asked to share their opinions on the decision.

Respondents can submit detailed feedback through an online form, with a maximum file size of 5.7 MB.

Contact information may be collected for follow‑up, but will be seen only by the Guardian.

Those wishing to use the form can click the provided link for assistance, and the terms of service and privacy policy are available via additional links.

The Guardian notes that participants should obtain permission before including other people’s names in their responses.

This development invites discussion about whether students should retain unrestricted access to Google Search regardless of a school’s AI policy, and what consequences might follow.
