The $149 HomePod Mini 2 arrives faster, quieter and in a fresh green, but its new Mac speaker feature still falls short.

First impressions after a week with the Mini 2

The $149 HomePod Mini 2 landed at Apple’s Welcome Home event and, at first glance, seemed like a modest refresh: a newer processor, a new color option, and an upgraded AirPlay experience. After a few days of daily use in a home office, the speed boost and quieter operation stand out, while the advertised Mac speaker feature remains non‑functional.

Snappier Siri thanks to new hardware

The most obvious upgrade is the move from the S5 to an S10 processor, paired with Wi‑Fi 6E support replacing the original Wi‑Fi 4. In practice, Siri now answers in under three seconds on most queries. Asking for a Taylor Swift track triggers playback within a couple of seconds, and a request for the latest World Series winner is answered in under two seconds. Even routine smart‑home commands—turning lights on, opening shades—execute in under three seconds, a stark contrast to the up‑to‑10‑second delays many users reported with the first‑gen Mini.

Quiet confidence in smart‑home actions

Another pleasant change is the reduction in verbal confirmations. Where the original Mini would often say “OK, Jen” or a lengthy acknowledgment before acting, the Mini 2 typically performs the command silently. It still provides brief spoken feedback for some actions, but the overall chatter is low enough to feel like a genuine improvement.

One feature that disappoints

Apple promoted a new “Mac speaker” capability, yet in testing the feature did not work. No further details were provided about when—or if—Apple plans to enable it, leaving the promise unfulfilled for now.

Design note

The Mini 2 is offered in a new green finish, adding a splash of color to the familiar compact form factor.

Bottom line

For users irritated by the original Mini’s sluggish responses, the speed and quieter interaction of the Mini 2 justify the $50 price increase. However, anyone counting on the advertised Mac speaker integration will need to wait for an unspecified fix.
