Instagram chief warns AI backlash will intensify

Adam Mosseri says growing anxiety over AI will become harder for creators and users alike.
Rising AI resentment
In a recent interview on the Colin and Samir podcast, Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged that a “lot of people really don’t like AI,” noting that the sentiment is not limited to students or creatives. He described a trend of “more anxiety and more frustration and more anger about AI,” especially within creative fields, and warned that this mood is “going to continue to get worse” in the coming years.
How Instagram is handling AI content
Mosseri said Instagram does not currently rank AI‑generated creators differently from human creators, but admitted the platform may not evaluate AI content as effectively as non‑AI content. He also mentioned that the term “AI slop” is often applied too liberally.
Earlier this year Instagram introduced a label for AI accounts, and in August the company began cracking down on AI‑generated profiles. Mosseri confirmed that the platform is now requiring AI accounts to label themselves, emphasizing the importance of transparency for users.
When asked about the possibility of banning AI content, Mosseri responded that a blanket ban is not practical, and that Instagram is “actively working out what to do” regarding AI‑generated material.
Creator concerns
The Instagram chief listed several worries voiced by creators: ownership of their own content, the risk of models being trained on that content without permission, safety issues, and the potential for AI to displace jobs across various professions, from content creators to engineers and mathematicians. He summed up the underlying fear as “being left behind in some way.”
As the platform navigates these challenges, Mosseri expects the debate over AI’s role in social media to grow more heated, making it “hard for a lot of people, not just in the industry.”
