Kennedy Center Honors Set for Dec. 7 Amid Renovation Turmoil

The Kennedy Center will celebrate pop legend Paul Anka and playwright David Mamet on Dec. 7 at Capital One Arena while its main building remains closed.
Exciting news for the performing‑arts world! The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced on Monday that its marquee event, the Kennedy Center Honors, will spotlight pop crooner Paul Anka and provocative playwright David Mamet this year.
Joining the headline honorees are veteran actor Andy Garcia, known for “Ocean’s Eleven,” country‑music icon Barbara Mandrell, and prolific music producer David Foster, whose résumé includes hits for Whitney Houston and Celine Dion.
The honors ceremony, traditionally held in the Center’s Opera House, will instead take place on Dec. 7 at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, D.C. The venue shift reflects ongoing turmoil at the Kennedy Center.
Since President Trump’s takeover, the Center has faced audience alienation and a legal battle. Trump’s allies are urging a federal judge to permit a two‑year, $257 million renovation, a plan challenged in a lawsuit by a Democratic congresswoman.
Meanwhile, the Center’s main building has been closed to the public, with officials describing the shutdown as temporary while they address “potential danger from crumbling infrastructure.”
After skipping the honors ceremony in his first term, Trump has taken a dominant role in his second, personally screening honorees, announcing selections in the Grand Foyer, and casting himself as the MC.
Stay tuned for a night of celebration that promises to shine a spotlight on these legendary artists despite the Center’s current challenges.
