Stricter affordability checks on Buy Now Pay Later schemes mean you might be denied credit unless you act wisely.

Exciting news for anyone who loves the convenience of Buy Now Pay Later! If you’ve used a BNPL service since the summer, you may have already felt a new test of whether you can afford your purchase.

BNPL has always functioned like a loan, typically repaid in instalments, but it only became officially regulated in July. The new rules require lenders such as Klarna, Clearpay and others to obtain regulator approval, giving shoppers more access to refunds and independent rulings on complaints.

What’s changed? Each BNPL transaction now triggers stricter background checks on your ability to repay. If you fail, the purchase will be blocked, and you could see your borrowing limit slashed or your account closed.

How to avoid being blocked – advice from Sara Williams, a former volunteer debt adviser at Citizens Advice who shares tips as “Debt Camel” on social media:

Slow down your purchases: ask yourself if what you’re buying is essential or can wait.

Be more careful about what you buy to avoid needing a high credit limit, for example when buying many clothes in different sizes.

Cancel subscriptions to escape the trap of using BNPL to cover previous payments.

Talk to debt charities for help and access to food‑bank vouchers if you’re using BNPL for essentials.

If you’re struggling with any loan repayments – BNPL or otherwise – seek help before the situation spirals. The government‑backed, independent MoneyHelper website offers a guide to finding free debt advice near you.

Stay ahead of the new rules, keep your finances healthy, and enjoy the flexibility of BNPL without the surprise block.
