OpenAI Pushes “Compute Campuses” as New Name for Its Data Centers

OpenAI says “compute campuses” better captures the scale and purpose of its AI infrastructure.
OpenAI’s Preferred Term for Its AI Infrastructure
OpenAI told Business Insider that it now calls its large‑scale data facilities “compute campuses.” The spokesperson said the phrase “better describes the scale and role of the infrastructure we’re building for AI.”
According to the same source, the company views these sites as “long‑term investments in computing, energy infrastructure and skilled work.”
Why the Name Change Matters
In September, a wave of rebranding began with the term “artificial intelligence” itself, as some political leaders pushed alternative labels.
A Pew survey conducted over the summer found that only 16% of Americans hold a positive view of AI’s future role in society.
Another Pew survey from September showed that just 4% of Americans believed data centers positively affect the environment, utility costs, neighborhood quality of life, jobs, and tax revenue.
Political and Public Context
The article notes that political opponents have been labeled “data senators,” a phrase that has gained traction in recent electoral discussions. The new term “compute campus senator” does not carry the same impact.
OpenAI’s Community Message
OpenAI’s spokesperson added, “We want the communities hosting that infrastructure to help shape it and share in the opportunities it creates.”
Awaiting Confirmation
Gizmodo reached out to OpenAI for confirmation of the rebrand and will update the story if a response is received.
