BAFTA Scotland honors Outlander
The historic‑fantasy series Outlander is set to be recognized by BAFTA Scotland with an Outstanding Contribution to Television award.
Four members of the show’s production team will receive the honor at a ceremony later this month. Among them are lead actors Sam Heughan (who played Jacobite soldier Jamie Fraser) and his co‑star Catriona Balfe (who portrayed Claire Fraser).
Two executive producers will also be awarded. Ronald D. Moore is being recognized for adapting Diana Gabaldon’s novels for television. He said, “It has been a tremendous pleasure to work with our Scottish crew, to utilise the Scottish locations and to learn more about Scottish culture and history. It’s been a huge joy for all of us on the production.”
American showrunner Matthew B. Roberts added, “When we first landed in Scotland, we were outsiders – Sassenachs – strangers in a strange land telling a very Scottish story. What we found was a country that opened its doors and a crew that opened their hearts. They welcomed us, guided us when we needed it, and made us feel like we belonged.”
BAFTA Scotland noted the series’ “undeniable” impact on the country’s screen industry and its role in providing opportunities for local talent.
More than 170 trainee roles were created through an initiative led by the production team.
Scotland’s tourism agency has highlighted the “Outlander effect,” noting that thousands of visitors travel to see the landscapes featured in the show.
Outlander concluded its eight‑season, 12‑year run in the summer, marking the end of a long‑running series that has left a notable imprint on Scottish television production.
The BAFTA Scotland ceremony will celebrate these contributions later this month.
