Dead of the Brain arrives on Steam with an English translation

After decades of obscurity, the 1992 PC‑98 adventure game Dead of the Brain is now officially available in English on Steam. The title, originally developed by FairyTale, was the company’s first foray into horror after a catalog dominated by erotica.

The game follows Cole and Dr. Cooger, who inadvertently unleash a formula that reanimates the dead. After a test on Cooger’s cat results in a violent encounter with a police officer, the streets fill with “oozing ghouls.” Players must point, click, and shoot to uncover a bizarre conspiracy hidden beneath the chaos.

Dead of the Brain draws clear inspiration from classic horror films such as George Romero’s Living Dead saga and Brian Yuzna’s Re‑Animator. Its tongue‑in‑cheek tone mirrors the self‑aware humor of Return of the Living Dead, with characters aware of genre tropes while being forced to play them out.

The English localization is a handcrafted effort that preserves the original’s sarcastic edge. Publisher FAKKU, known for its hentai platform, announced the port as part of a program to bring retro Japanese, non‑pornographic games to modern hardware. FAKKU noted that a few “racier sequences” were removed to meet Steam’s rating standards, but fans can restore the omitted content via a free patch hosted on the publisher’s website.

FAKKU also hinted at future releases, mentioning another 1992 title slated for publication.

Dead of the Brain joins a recent surge of retro Japanese games receiving modern releases. Earlier this year, Ecstatic Games’ remaster landed on Steam, and the FMV title The Dark Eye was reissued under a new name.

Fans of obscure Japanese gaming history now have a legal, English‑language avenue to experience one of the platform’s most infamous zombie adventures.
