Peacock’s Bold Play: Betting on Live Sports as NBCU Reshapes Its Future

NBCUniversal’s new chairman Matt Strauss explains how Peacock’s profitability and a focus on live sports fit into a massive corporate spin‑off.
Exciting times are unfolding at NBCUniversal.
Matt Strauss, who recently became chairman of the NBCUniversal Media Group, sat down to discuss the whirlwind of changes sweeping the company.
Just a month after his previous interview, Comcast spun off most of NBCU’s cable channels into a new entity called Versant. That move shifted Strauss’s responsibilities from overseeing only the direct‑to‑consumer portfolio—Peacock and a few other streaming services—to heading the entire distribution operation.
Now, Comcast is preparing to spin off the whole NBCU business into a brand‑new standalone company.
Peacock, the streaming arm that Strauss now oversees, finally posted a profit this year. That’s a milestone, he noted, even though the service remains far from the scale of Netflix.
The differentiator, Strauss argued, is live sports. He said sports “held up the cable industry for years, they held up broadcast, and now they’re the big thing that could make streaming a winner for NBC.”
During the conversation, Strauss also fielded questions that referenced the “red company” and the “blue company,” a shorthand the host used to talk about Netflix and Skydance, the firm that now owns Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.
He emphasized that NBCU’s sports assets could be the key to scaling Peacock beyond its current niche.
As Comcast readies the full NBCU spin‑off, Strauss’s expanded role places him at the center of a pivotal transformation for the media giant.
Stay tuned—this could reshape streaming as we know it.
