Philippine police have obtained a court warrant permitting them to examine electronic devices allegedly removed from the former home of Thomas Markle Sr., the 82‑year‑old father of the Duchess of Sussex.
The warrant was issued after Thomas Markle Jr. delivered four boxes containing computers, phones, hard drives and old videotapes to officers in Cebu last week. Police said a warrant was required before they could inspect the material.
Earlier this month, reports emerged that hundreds of images of child sexual abuse were allegedly found at the property in the Philippines.
Thomas Markle Sr., currently in the United States, has called the allegations “sick lies.”
Cebu Regional Prosecutor Graeme Elmido told the BBC that Thomas Markle Jr. was “adamant” the case should be investigated, believing his father “has to answer for it.”
The Sun on Sunday previously reported that Roslyn Loveless, the late ex‑wife of Thomas Markle Sr. and mother of Meghan’s two half‑siblings, had sent a letter to the Metropolitan Police in 2019 about the allegations. The letter was later shared with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan Markle confirmed the existence of the letter in a statement, saying she was “deeply distressed” and expressing thoughts for any children who may have been harmed. She also explained why she has largely cut off contact with her father and does not allow him contact with her children.
In an interview with the Sun, Thomas Markle Jr. apologized to Meghan for previously siding with his father during a long‑running estrangement, admitting he had “been protecting the wrong person for the past nine years.”
Thomas Markle Sr. moved to the Philippines last year after suffering a series of strokes and lived in Cebu until May. He is now reported to be in a Florida rehabilitation centre, learning to walk again after a leg amputation.
The investigation continues as authorities await the results of the forensic examination authorized by the new warrant.
