Serbia’s Student List movement staged its inaugural press conference in Pioneers’ Park, directly across from the parliament, on Thursday. The freshly elected MPs used the venue to demand the immediate dismissal of all police officers who had broken the law, specifically naming the heads of the police, the BIA security agency and the anti‑terror unit.

The Student List, which unseated the party of former president Aleksandar Vučić in a recent election, is composed of “novice politicians” such as intellectuals, professors, artists, athletes and up to twelve medical doctors and surgeons. The handover of power is expected to take weeks, and the movement warned that evidence of possible wrongdoing could be destroyed in that time.

Just days before the press conference, the same park had hosted a tent camp of Vučić loyalists outside his office. After Vučić admitted defeat on Sunday night, the camp was dismantled, and volunteers began cleaning the area on Monday.

Volunteer Marija Milovanović, 25, was quoted while scrubbing a bench: “This is just the first wave of spring cleaning, the new ones are coming now – we are very excited but ready to do it too.”

The Student List emerged from protests sparked by the fatal collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed sixteen people. The movement’s stated goal is to bring those responsible to justice and investigate corruption claims linked to the tragedy.

Under its “Student Plan,” the coalition promises to “halt the plunder, return stolen goods to the state budget, and invest directly in education and the economy.”

The purge of Vučić loyalists has already begun at the state broadcaster RTS, where director Manja Grčić has stepped down.
