Glenn Maxwell Calls Time on International Cricket, Remains in BBL

Australia’s dynamic all‑rounder Glenn Maxwell has retired from all international formats but will keep dazzling for the Melbourne Stars.
What a ride! The 38‑year‑old Australian batting all‑rounder has confirmed he is hanging up his international boots.
Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from both one‑day internationals and T20 internationals, saying he will continue to turn out for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.
His last match for Australia was against Oman in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where he delivered figures of 2‑13 from three overs with his off‑spin and was not required to bat.
Maxwell finishes his international career with five T20I centuries, a tally he shares with India’s Rohit Sharma, and he joins a select group of Australian men—Shane Watson, David Warner, Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh—who have scored a hundred in all three formats.
Speaking on the Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he had hoped for a farewell game at the MCG but understood the direction of the T20 squad.
He added that the next 12 to 24 months will bring change as the team looks toward the 2028 Olympics and seeks to expose younger players to international pressure.
Maxwell had previously quit ODIs in June of last year, a format in which he delivered his most memorable performance at the 2023 World Cup.
In that tournament he smashed a match‑winning 201 not out from 128 balls against Afghanistan, rescuing Australia from 91‑7 to chase down 292.
The 128‑ball double hundred was then the second‑fastest in ODI history and remains among the top four.
He also recorded the fastest 50‑over World Cup century, reaching 100 off just 40 deliveries against the Netherlands in the same 2023 event.
Maxwell was part of Australia’s World Cup‑winning squads in 2015 and 2023, and he hit the winning runs when the nation claimed the T20 World Cup title in 2021.
Across 286 international matches—149 ODIs, 130 T20Is and seven Tests—Maxwell amassed over 7,000 runs and claimed 136 wickets.
While his international chapter closes, fans can still enjoy his flair in the BBL, where he will keep entertaining the crowds for the Melbourne Stars.
