More than 400 Mater Pathology jobs to be affected by outsourcing
Mater Pathology will see over 400 staff impacted as it shifts to external providers, with more than 100 roles ending within two months.
Mater Pathology announces major staffing impact
More than 400 positions are expected to be affected at Mater Pathology in Brisbane and Springfield as the hospitals move to an external pathology provider.
A spokesperson blamed rising costs for the decision, noting that Medicare subsidies have not kept pace with financial pressures over the past decade.
More than 100 positions will be lost in the next two months, with most of the remaining positions slated to end in 2027.
The transition will involve specialist providers, including Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology and Pathology Queensland, delivering pathology services at the two hospitals.
The change does not apply to Mater hospitals in Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg or the Gold Coast, which already use external pathology services.
A spokesperson said the change will have no affect on patients and that the new model is used by private hospital operators across Australia.
“The pathology model Mater is adopting ... will allow more resources to be directed to the clinical care of our patients,” the spokesperson added, adding gratitude to the staff.
The announcement was made today, a month before Christmas.
