A $15 billion steel mill announced by Donald Trump has sparked skepticism in a tiny Iowa town just weeks before the midterm election.

Trump’s Oval Office announcement

On a Monday afternoon in late September, Donald Trump gathered Iowa Republicans in the Oval Office and declared that Mesabi Metallics would invest $15 billion to create the largest steel mill in the United States, locating it somewhere in “eastern Iowa.”

What the numbers look like

The White House estimates the plan would generate $95 billion in economic activity, create 6,000 construction jobs and 1,750 permanent positions once the plant is operational.

Local reaction in Wever

In the town of Wever, population 142, residents have heard the promise but see no shovels in the dirt or machinery on the roads leading to the Mississippi River.

“More jobs,” said Missy Pollpeter, 52, while dining at the Green Bay Bar and Grill, the town’s only restaurant.

Her husband, Mike Pollpeter, 60, added, “If they bring it here,” as he finished his burger.

Jeff Thompson, a bartender at Green Bay “Bottoms Up,” asked, “Remember Foxconn?” recalling another high‑profile promise that failed to materialize.

Political timing

The announcement came just over a month before the Tuesday midterm elections, in a congressional district that analysts deem the most competitive in Iowa.

Republican Representative Mariannette Miller‑Meeks, who represents south‑eastern Iowa, said the “project is for sure happening.” She was elected to a third term in 2024 by fewer than 800 votes and is a focal point for Democrats seeking to flip the House.

State support and corporate outlook

Iowa’s Republican‑controlled legislature quickly approved $1.4 billion in tax breaks to facilitate the development.

Charles Sutton, spokesperson for Mesabi—a Minnesota‑based firm within the Indian Essar Group—stated the company is on track to begin steel production by 2030. He added, “The project is in active development with strong momentum,” and promised “several announcements in the coming weeks in line with the project schedule.”

Bottom line

While the promise of a massive steel mill has generated headlines and political buzz, the people of Wever remain unconvinced, waiting for tangible signs that the $15 billion project will move beyond rhetoric.
