Newcastle’s home loss sparks bleak outlook

Jamie Carragher described Newcastle United as “flat and boring” after they were beaten 1‑0 by Everton on Monday Night Football.

Thierno Barry’s second‑half strike gave Everton their first away Premier League win of the season, and Newcastle were booed off St James’ Park at both half‑time and full‑time.

The loss was Newcastle’s fourth defeat in five games across all competitions, and it dropped them to 13th in the league, four points clear of the relegation zone with three wins from nine matches.

“It is going to be a tough season for them,” Carragher said, adding that the Monday fixture felt more crucial for Newcastle than their recent Carabao Cup loss, while Everton are “desperate for a trophy.”

Matthias Jaissle, appointed in August to replace Eddie Howe, began with promising draws against Liverpool and Bournemouth and a win at Tottenham, but home form has deteriorated.

Carragher noted that Newcastle’s recent home displays have lacked the aggressive, front‑footed style associated with Jaissle’s Red Bull background, leaving him “flummoxed” by the performances.

Looking ahead, Carragher highlighted Newcastle’s upcoming trip to Fulham on Saturday as a challenging encounter.

He concluded that while early results were “impressive,” concerns about the team’s underlying numbers and performances persist.
